چکیده

We analyze the optimum threshold value used in determining the modulation and coding scheme (MCS) level of retransmission packets in HARQ schemes. In HARQ schemes, although the first packet is erroneous, it has a considerable energy that can enhance the system performance such as packet error rate (PER) and throughput. Using the existing energy of the first transmission packet, we can save the power for retransmission while satisfying the given target PER. The saved power can be used to adjust the MCS level for retransmitted packets or increase the data rate of other users. The proposed algorithm which adjust the transmit power at the retransmission can be applied to all types of HARQ scheme s including Chase combining, partial incremental redundancy (IR), and full IR. Especially in the IR scheme, retransmitted packets convey inherent coding gain as well as energy because they contain additional redundant information for the first failed attempt. Using this inherent coding gain, we can save more energy compared to the simplest HARQ form, the Chase combining scheme. The result shows that the saved energy can enhance the throughput of the overall system. In addition, the proposed scheme yields robustness about feedback information errors.

A Turbo-Like Iterative Decoding Algorithm for Network Coded HARQ

This paper proposes a turbo-like decoding algorithm for network coded HARQ (NC-HARQ) retransmission scheme. Instead of retransmission erroneous packets individually, we send a network coded packet formed by XOR of two incorrectly received packets in the NC-HARQ retransmission. With respect to the two initial packets and one network coded packet, this retransmission scheme can be viewed as a pro...

Reliability-based hybrid ARQ using convolutional codes

Reliability-based hybrid ARQ (RB-HARQ) is a recently introduced approach to incremental-redundancy ARQ. In RB-HARQ, the bits that are to be retransmitted are adaptively selected at the receiver based on the estimated bit reliabilities. This technique has the potential to improve performance and minimize retransmission size by targetting those bits that are likely to be in error. However, previo...

Throughput Maximization by Adaptive Threshold Adjustment for AMC Systems

The mechanisms of adaptive modulation and coding (AMC) and hybrid automatic repeat request (HARQ) are two important schemes in modern wireless communication systems. In practical system design, the AMC mechanism is usually implemented with fixed switching thresholds for the modulation and coding schemes (MCS), and suffers from performance degradation. To mitigate this problem, a novel algorithm...

A Hybrid ARQ Using Double Binary Turbo Codes

The reliability of a data communication can be improved by using an automatic repeat request (ARQ) protocol, in which the receiver requests the retransmission of data packets when an error is detected in the received data. The hybrid ARQ (HARQ) scheme combines an ARQ and an error correction coding [1]. Turbo codes proposed by Berrou et al. in 1993 [2] show an error correction capability approac...

A study of Skype over IEEE 802.16 networks: voice quality and bandwidth usage

Skype, one of the popular VoIP applications, has its own redundancy mechanism to mitigate the impact of packet loss at the expense of additional bandwidth usage. However, the benefit of voice quality improvement through redundancy is reduced greatly in the case of consecutive loss of Skype packets. When Skype is running over wireless networks, the high likelihood of having consecutive packet lo...
